Welcome to the Family Morris website. Our branch of the Morris family has been traced back to John Morris, of Wales, who sailed to America in the late 1600's with his wife Ann Morris. Ship passenger list indicate possible ports of entry to be either Pennsylvania or Virginia before moving into North Carolina, Tennessee, and finally, Arkansas. Morris History (Name)
“There are two theories as to the Welsh origin of the name. Seaver states that in Wales, the names of “Mars”, “Manors”, and “Mour-rwyce” were very ancient titles given to such of the chieftains as were preeminent for valour, and whose numerous descendants account for the present frequency of the name in Wales. The meaning of the title is "warlike, powerful.” It is also claimed that “Morris families of Welsh extraction are descended from Elystan Glodrydd, born 933, Prince of Ferlys, a powerful chieftain. He was the founder of the forth royal tribe of Wales.” Family Connection: Some Descendants of John Morris. Kent Croswell, Anita Morris Croswell, 2000.
